Natalie VonRaven is a lifelong artist whose creative pursuits span a variety of disciplines, though painting remains her central passion. Working primarily in acrylic, she is known for her bold use of vivid color and striking contrast. Her work focuses on capturing and amplifying the most essential qualities of her subjects, a style she playfully describes as “Quintessential-ism.” Her subjects range from expressive portraits to whimsical animals, fan art, realism and dreamscapes. Each piece reflects her appreciation for beauty, uniquity and thoughtful reflection—often accompanied by a touch of sass and humor.
A full-time artist for nearly 2 decades, VonRaven continues to find joy in the completion of every new work. Over the course of her career, she has produced more than 1000 original paintings, most of which are held in private, public, and corporate collections around the world. She regularly exhibits at galleries and art events throughout southern Alberta.
Originally from Calgary, Alberta, VonRaven works from her home studio in the Foothills, where she dwells with her beloved family, pets and ever-growing collection of plants.
Artist Statement:
I am drawn to bringing things into existence that cannot otherwise be seen—dreamlike, surreal, and often exaggerated visions that live somewhere between imagination and emotion. Painting allows me to articulate ideas and feelings through imagery when words fall short.
Through my work, I explore the quiet inner experiences we often believe are ours alone, only to discover they are universal. Art becomes a bridge for connection; when someone recognizes a part of themselves within a piece, it creates unity and moments of shared understanding.
I am inspired by bold, expressive contrasts and amplified elements that transform the ordinary into something vibrant and alive. By exaggerating color, form, and character, I aim to reveal the essence of a subject and celebrate the extraordinary within the mundane.
Ultimately, I hope my work encourages viewers to pause, to reflect, and to see the world—and their own creativity—with a renewed sense of curiosity and possibility.
