Baby Grogu, Abominable Snow Beast, Covid Christmas, Mush & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

What a year! I wish I could say I’m glad it’s over but I’m pretty sure 2021 is going to be just as shitty *ahem* challenging…

All negativity aside, I was very fortunate to remain inspired through most of the year and painted quite a bit, 44 new pieces! (hoping to squeeze in at least one more!) Many of my usual art events and exhibits were cancelled but I ended up participating in a number of exciting new ones. Yay for adaptability! The event organizers this year absolutely crushed it (kudos to them) and I was so grateful to get out and see people =)

Now, I’m going to get mushy… Nothing like a global pandemic to get you thinking about what’s really important! I am very grateful for everything I have, all the things I am able to do and each and every person I get to share my life with. So, if we know eachother or you’re reading this, that means YOU!

💜 THANK YOU ðŸ’œ

I also love huggles and when the time comes I plan on making up for all the ones I’ve missed out on. Like, REALLY make up for it. It’s going to get awkward people!

On the art front:

Summer art shows and harvest markets have wrapped up for the year, I miss them already! It really is a treat to get out there and see everyone. But, alas, hibernation begins… There are a couple holiday shows on the horizon, fingers crossed that they go ahead without too many hiccups. October is a busy month at chateau VonRaven, Thanksgiving, Halloween and birthdays but I did manage to get some painting in…

*THE FRAME PROJECT UNVEILING*

Welp, here it is! 50 pieces of original art featuring words inspired by the dumpster fire that’s been 2020. All sarcasm aside, it’s been a challenging year and I am glad to see so much positivity and inspiration come out of it all. It was a great idea for a project, well executed and I am happy to be included in this lasting relic of a very unique time in history.

Ironically, the covid inspired installation is displayed in a location currently unavailable to public viewing due to covid restrictions – go figure! *face palm* I do look forward to seeing it in person…one day.

*HAPPY HALLOWEEN*

It’s going to be weird this year, but I hope everyone finds their own little ways of making it awesome! May your day be filled with candy, magic, monsters and all the roasted pumpkin seeds you can nosh =)

Why Art?

A large abstract painting hangs in the foyer of my favorite pizza joint. (needless to say, I’ve spent a fair amount of time staring at it). It’s very neutral, splashes of browns and beige. Dark taupe, medium taupe and light taupe. I don’t care for it, I wouldn’t rush to hang it in my house. But I spend more time staring at it rather than the TV screen on an opposite wall as I eagerly await the greasy box of cheesy goodness. I’m always drawn to a particular feature which reminds me of a coffee cup ring… that small, personal impression may or may not be apparent to every viewer (art, after all, is subjective) but it’s always the first thing I notice. From there, a door in my imagination opens… all the sensations experienced when you walk in to a cozy coffee shop. The warmth, the aromas, the dimly illuminated ambience. The anticipation of delicious flavors and refreshment. A quiet escape or a visit with friends. It feels like comfort. Lost in my own little world, reality eclipsed by daydreams… and then it happens, a distant voice pierces the reverie… “Pick up for Natalie”?!? Quite the experience from a mere picture on the wall, imagine the response from a piece of art you actually like!

Art is so much more than a picture on the wall. It is an expression, a connection, an experience. A conversation piece, an inspiration, an ideal to work toward. A reminder to smile, or laugh or not take yourself so damn seriously.

*THE FRAME PROJECT*

The Frame Project is a collaborative community art project to showcase how residents have been inspired during the Covid-19 pandemic. 250 5x7 canvases will be handed out upon which local artists will create a word or phrase in any medium. Once completed, the community art piece will be displayed at Pason Centennial Arena and the Okotoks Rec Center.

It took some mulling to pick a word, I didn’t over think it at all. Then it hit me like a tsunami! “Flow” was perfect for ALL the reasons. (Tho I did contemplate swearwords - both existing and creative new variations). “Flow” felt more positive and socially acceptable ;) Water is such a timeless and powerful metaphor for all aspects of life. Fierce yet gentle… Flow stopped during lockdown and I think we can all agree it sucked (euphemism). When flow ceases, stagnation sets in. We’ve spent the past several months yielding, bending, adapting… learning to go with the flow. How does water stay clean and pure? FLOW. Even while planning this image the lesson was inherent. I had a grandiose vision but felt as though I was swimming against the proverbial current in my attempt to achieve it. When I chilled the f out and went with the FLOW it all came together. The water effect was quite out of my comfort zone but I am happy with how it turned out =)

You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop ðŸ’œ

I’ll be sure to post more info when the project is complete!

Rainbow Spider, Nosy Cow, Ridiculously Excited Owl & Upcoming Art Shows!

 Oy mates!

*NEW PAINTINGS*

This one was created en plein air at the Okotoks Clothesline Art Sale. Makes me want to paint outside in the sunshine all the time =) It was probably for the best as I made a HUGE mess splattering paint everywhere =)

Hopefully this one makes everyone like spiders a little bit more! It’s amazing what we can find outside of our…

This one was done purely for fun. Cows are so dang cute and I love playing with distorted perspectives. In selecting a title I tried “milking” it for puns… my last cow painting was called “Mootiful” so that was already taken. The only other things I could think of seemed “udderly” ridiculous so I went with something simple and blunt.

What cha doin? What cha got there?!?
